The galaxy’s fate and Gurigura’s fate will be determined by whether the assassin of the Federation of Free Planets or the rescue team of the Empire will find her first—or something like that. This information was input into my brain with the Nano Machine and while at it, a translation device for the alien language and stuff was conveniently implemented in my brain—or something like that.

Obeying the commands of Guri or Gura or whomever it was, I locked the door and pretended not to be home. Guri also cut off the phoneline. I was really on a lone island in the suburbs. For 2 months, we cut off all communication with the outside world and spent our days just watching TV and playing cards and POS.

She then glared at me intensely. This was a horribly harassing thing to say in this situation where a man and a woman were sleeping in the same room. I apologized immediately.

People say that suicidal people rethink their decisions when you do this. See, because of the pain caused to her flesh, Guri’s blood rose to her head and now she was coming at me in anger. Just as I planned, Guri tackled me down to the floor while glaring at me with fierce eyes. Without missing a beat, Guri pinned me into a Kami Shiho Gatame position. That’s right, take out your frustration at this desperate situation where no help is coming!

#バシャール 「私の種族は冬になると繁殖活動を開始するんだ。もちろんそんな下等な本能は、普段はナノマシンで抑制してるんだ！」Bashar: “My tribe begins reproductive activities in the winter. Of course such base instincts are normally controlled with the Nano Machine!”

#バシャール 「でも勘違いするんじゃない。誰でも見境なしってワケではない。あの夜、お前が見せた優しさが私の脳の繁殖トリガーを引いてしまったんだ！あ、あっちに行け！私に近寄るんじゃない！」Bashar: “Don’t misunderstand though! It’s not like anyone would do. The kindness you showed me that night pulled the reproductive trigger in my brain!! G- go away!! Don’t get close to me!!”
#主人公 「ち、近寄ってくるのはそっちじゃないか！」Protagonist: “Y-you’re the one coming close to me!”
#バシャール 「こうなったらもう止まらないんだ。断食して本能を押さえようとしたがもう無理だ！もう知らない！どうなっても知らない！」Bashar: “Nothing can stop me at this point. I tried to suppress my instincts by fasting, but it’s no use anymore!! I don’t care whatever happens now! Whatever!”
#主人公 「つ、つまり、発情期ってことかよ！」Protagonist: “Y-you mean you are in heat??”
#バシャール 「そうだ！」Bashar: “That’s right!”
#主人公 「しかし帝国の女王がこんな僕なんかを相手にそんなことしていいのか？あとで誰かに僕が怒られたりするんじゃないか？」Protagonist: “But is it okay for a queen of an Empire to do that kind of thing with me? Isn’t someone going to get angry with me later?”
#バシャール 「安心しろ。確かにこんな三等星の原住民と私がこんなことをしたら皆は眉をひそめるであろうが帝国では私が最高権力者だ、誰にも文句は言わせない」Bashar: “Don’t worry. Of course if I did that with a native of a third-rate planet like this people will frown, but I am the most powerful person in the Empire. No one can say anything to me.”
#主人公 「でもやっぱり物事には順序ってのがあると思うし、ぼ、僕なんてただの平凡な高校生だし」Protagonist: “I still think that there are proper orders to things and besides, I-I’m just a nobody high schooler.”
#バシャール 「平凡なんかじゃない！お前は勇気ある優しい人間だ。お前ほど素晴らしい生き物を私は見たことがない。生きてるだけでいい！」Bashar: “You’re not a nobody! You are a courageous and kind human. I have never seen such a fantastic being. You just have to be alive!”
◆冬と本能◆◆Winter and Instincts◆
#缶詰生活を続けてもう２ヶ月が過ぎ、冬がやってきていた。だが、一向に宇宙から助けはやってこない。Two months have passed since we started the holed up life and now winter was here. There were no signs of help from outer space coming.
#もう限界になった僕は、ついに外へ出ようと言い出すが、自分が空腹でも死なない体、空腹で辛いのは本能の名残だと知り、愕然とする。I was at my limits and started to say that we should go out, but was astonished to find out that I had a body that doesn’t die even if I felt hunger and that the hard feeling was simply a remanence of my instincts.
#そしてその本能に反応し、バシャールが発情期へと入る。自分でもいい、と。結構かっこいい、と。生きていだけでいい、と。Bashar then goes into heat, responding to her instincts. She said that she was okay with me, that I was pretty good looking, and that I just had to be alive.

#左の方に歩いていった僕は、中央広場入り口に、『工事中につき立ち入り禁止』という張り紙がしてあるのに気づいた。I chose left and walked a bit. I noticed that at the entrance to the park square, there was a sign saying, “Construction Site. Do Not Enter.”
  • This is kept consistent with previous documents and takes into account this is a game script so there is a “choice” even if it is not explicit in the Japanese.

The sound of the fighting had come right up to me. Who knew when the punks’ metal pipe would land on my head by mistake? Plus, I was starting to hear explosive sounds that sounded like guns. I thought:
#（もしかしたらこれは、不良の喧嘩どころの話ではなく、ヤクザ同士の大抗争なのかもしれないぞ）This might not be just a little scuffle between punks, but a full-blown war between yakuza.
#主人公 「…………！」Protagonist: “…….!!”
#すぐに立ち上がって逃げようとする。が、すっかり腰が抜けていて、動けなかった。どどどどうしよう？変な意地を張るんじゃなかった。バンバン銃声が鳴り響いていた。カチンカチンという、何か｛けんげき／剣戟｝のような音も聞こえてきた。青竜刀を振り回す外国マフィアと、トカレフやら何やらを撃ちまくる地元ヤクザの一大抗争ヴィジョンが、僕のまぶたの裏に鮮やかに描き出された。その抗争のど真ん中で、腰抜かした僕はぎゅっと目を瞑り、ベンチに座って震えているのだった。I tried to get up and run. But, I was completely scared out of my wits and couldn’t move at all. W-w-w-what I should I do?? I shouldn’t have been so stubborn! Now there were gunshots ringing through the air. There were also clanking sounds that sounded like swords clanging. In my mind, I could vividly see a huge war between foreign mafia swinging around Chinese falchions and native yakuza shooting off Tokarev TTs. Right in the middle of that war, I was shaking on a bench with my eyes tightly closed.

I could hear a voice saying,

#ハンター 「ヤツに銃は効かない、抗ウイルスパイルを撃ち込め」Hunter: “A gun doesn’t work for it. Shoot an anti-virus pile.”
#そんなセリフも聞こえてきて、もう何が何だかわからない。僕が座っていたベンチも、凄い衝撃でがくんと揺れた。薄目を開けてチラリとベンチの背もたれを見ると、僕の体の二十センチぐらい横に、なにか銀色の杭のようなものが深々と突き刺さっていた。I have no idea what’s going on. The bench I was sitting on also swerved, taking a huge impact from something. When I opened my eyes slightly and peaked at the back of the bench, there was a silver picket solidly pierced through just 20cm away from me.

#そして──おそるおそる前方に目を向けると、４，５人の男が、一人の小さな女の子を取り囲み、彼女にボウガンのようなものを向けているのが見えた。銀色の杭はそのボウガンから発射されたもののようだった。And––when I slowly look before me, I saw 4 or 5 men surrounding a small girl and pointing something like a crossbow at her. It looked like the silver picket was fired from that crossbow.

#一方、女の子は悪者に囲まれているというのに気丈な声で言った。Then, the girl—even though she was surrounded by bad guys—said in a firm voice,
#エリス 「馬鹿な考えはもうやめにせんか？こんなことをしても何の得にもならんぞ。おぬしらは人類が数万年かけて積み上げたものを自分たちの手で破壊しようとしてるんじゃ。私の力はおぬしらの手に余る。制御できず自滅するのがオチじゃぞ？」Elise: “Stop your foolish thoughts. You shall gain nothing from doing this. You are trying to destroy what humankind has built up over tens of thousands of years. My power is beyond all of yours. You will only self-destruct without being able to control it.”
#悪者の一人はボウガンを女の子に向けたまま言った。One of the bad guys said while keeping the crossbow pointed at the girl:
#ハンター 「我々の実験に協力してくれていれば、こんな手荒なマネはしなくてすんだのですよ」Hunter: “If you would only cooperate with our experiment, we wouldn’t have to get so rough with you.”
#そしてチラリと僕を見た。And then briefly glanced at me.
#ハンター 「どうします主任？この公園は封鎖したはずなんですが、なぜか民間人が」Hunter: “What should we do, Chief? I thought we closed down this park, but somehow a civilian has shown up.”
#ハンター 「どうもこうもない。残念だが目撃者はいつものように処理するしかあるまい」Hunter: “There is no choice. It’s too bad, but we have to dispose of the witnesses as usual.”
#『主任』は僕にボウガンを向けた。“The Chief” pointed the crossbow at me.
#エリス 「馬鹿者！早く逃げるんじゃ！」Elise: “You stupid!! Run! Quickly!”
#女の子が叫んだ。The girl yelled.
#僕は逃げようとした。その前にあっさりと銀の杭が発射され、僕の胸にサクッと突き刺さった。I tried to run. But before I could, the silver picket was fired and easily pierced my heart.
#主人公 「あいてー、いてー、いてー、何コレ何？洒落になんないよコレ」Protagonist: “Ow!! Ouch! Ouch!! What is this? This is not a joke.”
#状況には現実味がないくせに、痛みのリアリティーは凄かった。とても痛かったので、僕は胸に刺さった杭を引っこ抜こうとした。ベンチから立ち上がり、胸の杭を握って引っ張ると、肋骨がめきめきという嫌な音を立てた。さらに力を入れると、やっとのことで杭はスポッと抜けた。同時に胸の穴から大量の血が噴き出した。僕は糸の切れた操り人形のようにコテンと地面に崩れ落ちた。Even though the situation had no sense of reality to it, there was a ton of reality to the pain. It was so painful that I tried to pull out the picket piercing my heart. When I stood up from the bench and pulled on the picket, my ribs cracked in this creepy and alarming way. When I pulled with more strength, the picket came out smoothly. Then, blood gushed out from that hole. I easily fell to the ground like a puppet who lost its strings.
#そして──見ると、僕の目の前に、女の子の膝頭があった。Then—I saw a girl’s knees right in front of my eyes.
#だがすぐ僕の視界は暗くなって、だんだん何も見えなくなってきた。My field of vision darkened and eventually I wasn’t able to see anything.

#主人公 「死ぬ……」Protagonist: “I’m dying….”
#少女は訊いた。The girl asked,
#エリス 「おのし、死にたくないか？」Elise: “Would you like to not die?”

#瞬間、僕は女の子に抱き起こされた。That moment, the girl picked me up.
#悪者が叫んだ。Then the bad guy yelled.
#ハンター 「撃て！早く！」Hunter: “Shoot! Now!!”
#しかし女の子にボウガンを命中させるには、僕の体が盾になっていた。一斉にボウガンが発射されたが女の子は無事だった。僕は無事ではなかった。沢山の銀の杭が僕の背中に刺さっていた。コレはもう本当にダメだ。出血が半端でない。しかも女の子も、なぜか僕を殺そうとするし──。But I was acting as a shield for the girl and the crossbow had to go through me to get to her. Crossbows were fired at once, but the girl was safe. I was not. Many silver pickets pierced my back. This is really bad… There was so much bleeding. Plus, even the girl was somehow trying to kill me—
#エリス 「少し痛いぞ。我慢するんじゃ」Elise: “It’s going to hurt a bit. Stay strong!”
#何を思ったか女の子が僕の首筋にそっと唇を当てたのだった。そして何を思ったか女の子はがぶりと僕の首筋に噛みついたのだった。頸動脈がブチンと音立てて切れた。And then, the girl suddenly touched my nape softly with her lips. And then, whatever she was thinking, she suddenly bit my nape! My artery snapped with a loud noise.

#血！Blood!!
#ぎゃああああ、痛い痛い痛い痛い──脳に血が回らない、あと何秒かで死ぬと思う。ついでに人の首を咬みちぎったこの女の子も、今度こそ撃たれて死ぬと思う。Gyaaaaaaaaaa! Ouch-ouch-ouch-ouch—My brain is not getting any blood. I think I’m going to die in a few seconds. I also think that this girl who bit off my neck will be shot and die because I heard a voice say,

#そして彼女は何か迷っているようにうつむいていたが、まもなくキッと顔を上げて公園中に響く大声で叫んだ。She was looking down as if lost in thought, but eventually looked up determined and shouted in a big voice that reverberated throughout the park.
#エリス 「おお！そうもこの老いぼれの力が欲しいなら見せてやろう！どれほど苦労して科学発展させようともあんた方は自分の脳に裏切られるのじゃ。我が種族の餌としての本能に裏切られるんじゃ！」Elise: “Come! If you want the powers of this old fag, let me show you! No matter how hard you try to develop science you will all be betrayed by your own brains. You will be betrayed by instincts that are the feed of our kind!”
#瞬間、彼女は足に刺さった杭を一息に抜いて立ち上がり、瞳孔が拡大した瞳で悪者どもをジロリとひと睨みした。In that moment, she pulled out in one stroke a picket that was stuck in her leg, stood up, and glared at the bad guys with her dilated pupils.
#瞬間、血しぶきが飛び散った。In that moment, blood splattered.
#主人公 「…………」Protagonist: “……”
#そう血しぶき──その血しぶきの詳細は、あまり覚えていなかった。それはあまりに残酷な光景だったので、僕は何も覚えていなかった。女の子に睨まれた男たちはポケットから大振りなナイフを取り出し、一斉にそのナイフで自分の首をかき切った。頸動脈から天高く血が噴き出し、その血を浴びて月の夜に少女が目を輝かせクルクル踊っている姿など、僕は何も覚えていなかった。Yes, gushing blood—I didn’t remember much about the details of the blood. I didn’t remember anything because it was such a cruel scene. The men the girl glared at pulled out big knives and at once slashed their own necks with those knives. I didn’t remember anything like the girl dancing and twirling around under the moonlight bathing the blood spurting up to the heavens from their arteries.
#（あぁ夢だ。何もかも夢であってくれ……）Oh, it’s all a dream. Please, let this all be a dream…
#その虚しい祈りが通じたのかどうか、僕は奇妙に心躍るこの残酷な光景からついに解放された。I don’t know if my hopeless prayers reached heaven, but I was finally released from this strangely exciting and cruel scenery.
#気絶か、あるいは死か、なんにせよ僕の意識はそこで途切れた。Whether I had lost consciousness or died, my consciousness was cut then.
◆異端の戦◆◆War of the Heretics◆
#左に歩いていった僕は、公園でとある戦いの現場へと遭遇する。I walked to the left and ran into a fight in the park.
#銃や銀の杭を打つ連中と、少女の戦い。A fight between guys who had guns and shoot silver pickets and a girl.
#僕はその現場を見てしまったということで、打たれてしまう。I got shot at because I had witnessed the scene.
#すると少女は『死にたくないか？』と問い、首筋に噛み付く。The girl then asks, “Do you not want to die?” and then bites my nape.
#薄れゆく意識の中、最後に見たのは血しぶきを浴びてクルクル踊っている、少女の姿だった。What I saw as my consciousness fading away was the girl dancing and twirling under the gushing of blood.

#エリス 「朝だよーお兄ちゃん！」Elise: “Come on Brother, it’s morning!”
  • This is added in addition toお兄ちゃん (Brother), which literally means “big brother”. The calling here is a form of nudging like the Japanese “big brother” which is why the “Come on…” was added.
#山田エリスの声で目が覚めた。あぁ助かった怖かった、寝汗ビッショリかいてた。従姉妹に起こされるまでボウガンだの血しぶきだの、かなり猟奇バイオレンスな夢を見ていた。Elise Yamada’s voice woke me up. Oh, thank god, that was scary–I was covered in sweat. Until my cousin woke me up, I was in a pretty psychotic and violent dream with crossbows and gushing blood.
#エリス 「どうしたのお兄ちゃん顔が真っ青だよ」Elise: “What’s the problem? You’re completely pale.”
#主人公 「…………」Protagonist: “…….”
#夢の話は黙ってることにした。まだ小さいエリスに夢の内容を話したら、怖がらせてしまうばかりか、品性まで疑われる。心外だ。I decided to stay quiet about the dream. If I told Elise, this young girl, about my dream, I wouldn’t only scare her, but she would even question my character. That would be annoying.
#実際、僕は安易なバイオレンスは好きではない。映画でも、観客の目を引きつけるためだけに存在する安直な血しぶきや殺人には、ついつい眉をひそめてしまうタイプの良識派である。In fact, I don’t like cheap violence. I have enough good sense that cheap blood and murder in movies just to capture the audience’s attention makes me frown with disapproval.
#主人公 「とはいえ……」Protagonist: “But….”
#そのバイオレンスシーンが、話のテーマと密接に結びついている場合は問題ない。ゾンビといえばハラワタ。フランケンシュタインといえば死体パーツ。エイリアンといえば破裂腹。If the violent scene is intimately tied in with the theme of the general story, there’s no problem—like zombies and guts; like Frankenstein and dead body parts; like aliens and burst stomachs.
#そのように、主題と結びついている残虐シーンは、むしろシナリオライターのクリエイティヴィティの証明であり、決してシナリオライターの無能さ、品性の下劣さの現れではないのだ……なんてことを考えつつ、僕はふと枕元の時計を見た。In fact, gory scenes that are incorporated with the main theme like that prove the script writer’s creativity, and it’s not a show of the writer’s lack of talent or baseness of character—was what I was thinking when I happened to look at the clock by my pillow.
#主人公 「ん？……まだ朝の四時じゃないか。外も真っ暗だぞ」Protagonist: “Huh? …It’s only 4am. It’s still dark out.”
#エリス 「あ、アレ？ごめんなさい！まだエリス、日本の携帯電話の使い方がよくわからなくって、アラームを間違えちゃったみたい」Elise: “Oh, what? I’m sorry! I must have made a mistake with the alarm. I don’t know how to use Japanese cell phones yet.”
#主人公 「ははは、そうかそうか、まぁ仕方がない。なんか目が覚めちゃったから、このまま起きてることにするよ。でもエリスはまだ寝てなさい。寝ないと大きくなれないぞ」Protagonist: “Oh, I see. Well, don’t worry. I can’t really go back to sleep so I’ll just stay awake. But you should go back to sleep. Otherwise, you won’t grow well.”

#主人公 「ははは、そうかそうか。早起きは三文の得とも言うしな。一緒に朝ご飯でも食べるか」Protagonist: “Hahaha, yeah? Well, they do say an early raiser makes more dollars, too. Maybe we could have some breakfast together?”

#本当に眠くなさそうだ。子供のサーカディアンリズムというのは、案外こういうものかもしれない。She really doesn’t seem sleepy. Maybe children’s circadian rhythm is like this?
#僕も小学生のころは、朝五時に起きて、六時に登校し、朝のホームルームまで体育館で遊びまわっていたものだ。さすがに四時起きは早すぎるが、今夜、早めに寝かしつければ問題ないだろう。I also used to wake up at 5am, go to school at 6 and then play around at the gym until it was time for the morning routine at the homeroom when I was in elementary. Of course, 4 is too early, but I’m sure it will be fine if I put her to sleep earlyish tonight.
#と、そんな父親みたいなことを考えつつ、手早く朝食の用意をする。Thinking like a father, I quickly get breakfast ready.
#エリスも皿を並べるなどテキパキ手伝ってくれた。いまどきの子供のくせに、しつけが出来ているヤツだ。海外暮らしが功を奏しているのかもしれない。Elise also helps out efficiently, taking out plates and stuff. She’s impressively well-schooled for a modern child. Perhaps her life abroad is working well for her.

#エリス 「褒めても何も出ないんだよー、いただきまーす！」Elise: “Nothing will happen for flattering me, you know! Let's eat now!”
#僕はぱくぱく食べるエリスの様子を、目を細めて眺めつつ思った。I was remembering as I watched Elise happily eating her food

I came to my senses just for a moment thanks to the pain. I’m going to destroy this brain before it gets consumed by madness again. I jumped off and moved away from Elise as quickly as I could and tried to crash through the window glass.

#主人公 「ははは……吸血鬼！面白い冗談もほどほどに」Protagonist: “Hahaha…vampire! Quit the joking.”
#エリス 「我が一族の力の源……おぬしたちの言葉で言えば一種のレトロウイルス──吸血鬼ウイルスに感染したおぬしはあの夜、瞬く間に肉体を再生させた。だがひとたび私のウイルスに感染しても、おぬしの免疫力がウイルスを撃退するかもしれん。吸血鬼にならんですむかもしれん。その可能性を見極めるため、おぬしに催眠術をかけ、山田エリスとしておぬしに近づき、おぬしを監視しておった。その必要はもうない。……おぬしはもう吸血鬼じゃ」Elise: “That night, you contracted the vampire virus—known as a kind of retrovirus in your words and the source of our tribe’s power—and that revived your body immediately. However, once you contract my virus, your immune system might repel the virus. Perhaps you will not end up being a vampire. To discern the possibility, I hypnotized you, got close to you as Elise Yamada and I was monitoring you. There is no more need…. You are already a vampire.”

#とても信じられなかったが、僕は鮮血を浴びて踊るエリスの姿を思い出していた。いつの間にか羽交い締めは解かれており──僕は振り返り、エリスを罵った。I couldn’t believe any of this, but I was remembering the image of Elise dancing in a bath of fresh blood. Before I knew it, she had unlocked her hold on me. —I looked back and cursed her out.
#主人公 「そうだ……こ、この、人殺しめ」Protagonist: “Th-this…. murderer!”
#エリス 「おぬしを助けてやったのじゃ。あやつらは私を生け捕りにし、私の力を我がものにしようとしていた。おそらくどこぞの国の秘密部隊じゃろう。命令とあらば同胞を殺すこともためらわん。あやつらからおぬしを助けるには仕方なかったのじゃ」Elise: “I saved you. They were trying to capture me alive and trying to make my power their own. They must be some country’s secret force. They wouldn’t hesitate to kill a comrade if they are ordered to. That was the only way I had to save you from them.”
#主人公 「う、嘘だ。血を吸いたかっただけなんだろ？血を浴びて気持ちよさそうに踊っていただろ？」Protagonist: “L-lier. You just wanted to drink the blood, right? You were dancing happily bathing blood.”
#エリスはうつむき、顔を赤らめた。She looked down and blushed.
#エリス 「何百年ぶりかの生き血じゃった……ついつい我を忘れてしまった」Elise: “It was fresh blood I hadn’t had in a few hundred years….I was ecstatic.”
#主人公 「そんなこといっても、僕にはわかるぞ。この衝動……とても襲わずにはいられない。いままで何人の血を吸ってきた？いままで何人、吸血鬼にした？どれだけの人数、その目で操って面白半分に殺してきた？……そ、そうだ、本当はもうこの地球に吸血鬼は溢れかえってるんじゃないか？唾液感染するんなら、爆発的に広まってるはず」Protagonist: “I know it even if you don’t say so. This impulse is so powerful….you can’t not attack. How many people’s blood have you drunk? How many did you turn into vampires? How many people did you kill for fun, manipulating them with those eyes of yours. …I-I know. Isn’t this earth already full of vampires? If it’s contracted through saliva it must have already spread all over.”

#エリス 「若いおぬしと一緒にせんでくれ。この老いぼれはもう、旅することだけが趣味なんじゃ。日本には温泉に入りに来たんじゃ。腰が痛いからのう。……つまりもう歳なんじゃよ。最後に同族と会ったのが何世紀前かも思い出せん。きっと皆、血の味に飽き飽きして、ひっそり消えていったんじゃろう。まだ旅に未練がありこの世に留まっておる私とて、とても新たな同族など増やす気にはなれん。年に数回、腹が空いたら、輸血センターの職員をちょいと操り、輸血パックからほんのちょっぴり血を失敬する、それだけじゃ。……こうしていちいち若造に説明するのも骨が折れるわい。いまさら若い同族など、作りたくもないわい」Elise: “I’m not the same as you, young one. This old body is only interested in travelling now. I came to Japan to go to the hot springs. Because my lower back hurts…. In other words, I’m old already. I can’t even remember how many centuries ago it was that I met someone from the same tribe. They probably all got tired of the taste of the blood and disappeared quietly. Even I, who is remaining in this world because of my attachments to travel can’t be bothered to increase the tribe. I only take a little blood from the blood donation pack by manipulating a blood donation center employee a few times a year when I get hungry. …So tiring to have to explain this each time to a young one. I don’t even want to create a young tribemate at this point.”

Probably the only vampires on this planet or just you and me. There used to be the tribemates all over the place, but that’s already of 10,000s years ago. When the first generations disappeared of their own will after getting bored of the world, their children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren all disappeared with their parents’ fates.
#主人公 「だ、だとしても、人間なんて虫けらみたいに思ってるんだろ？本当はいますぐ誰彼かまわず噛みつきたいんだろ？」Protagonist: “E-even so, you think of humans as worthless bugs or something, don't you? Don’t you actually want to bite down on anyone you can?”

#エリスは目をそらした。She looked away.
#そして──長い沈黙の果てに、疲れたように肩を落とした。Then—after a long silence, she drooped her shoulders as if she were tired.
#エリス 「……おお、人間なら沢山殺してきたぞ。昔は神とあがめられていたものじゃ。皆、喜んで血を捧げてくれたものじゃ。あのころはおぬしらも我らも無邪気じゃった。アステカは暖かくて良い土地じゃった。おお、懐かしいのう」Elise: “….Sure, I’ve killed many humans. We used to be worshipped as gods in the past. They all happily offered us blood. In those days, you and we were both innocent. Azteca was a warm and good land. Oh, memories.”

#エリス 「……そうよ、我らは人殺しの血みどろの、人間の、敵じゃ」Elise: “….That’s right. We are enemies of humans who are murderers covered in blood.”
#僕は訳のわからない怒りに駆られて、エリスに掴みかかった。I was overcome by incomprehensible anger and grabbed Elise.
#エリスは苦しげな表情を浮かべながらも冷静だった。Elise looked troubled, but was still calm.
#エリス 「そして忘れるな。いまやおぬしも、人間の敵なんじゃ」Elise: “And don’t forget. Now you too are an enemy of humans.”
#主人公 「あぁ、そ、そうだ。す、吸いたい。噛みつきたい。殺したい」Protagonist: “Oh, I-I know. I-I want to drink. I want to bite. I want to kill.”
#エリス 「その本能を宥めるには少なく見積もって百年はかかるじゃろうて」Elise: “To calm down those instincts, it will take at least 100 years.”
#主人公 「いやだ、そんなのいやだ……吸いたい……でも嫌だ……嫌だ、嫌だ、嫌だ……」Protagonist: “No…no! ….I want to drink…but, no….no, no. no….”
#エリス 「吸わぬとしても二度とお日様は拝めぬ。我らの体に巣くうウイルスは日の光に弱い。おぬしはまだ神経系をちょびっと侵されているだけじゃが、私の体など９割方この忌まわしいウイルスで出来ておる。紫外線を浴びたら一時間も持たず溶けてしまうじゃろう。アイスクリームじゃ」Elise: “Even if you don’t drink, you will never be able to bask in the sun. The virus that lives in our bodies doesn’t do well in sunlight. With you, it’s only your nerves that are just a little invaded, but my body is composed of about 90% by this cursed virus. I will probably melt within 1 hour if I were to be exposed to UV lights. Just like an ice cream.”
#主人公 「そ、そんなの嫌だ……人間に戻してくれ……お前みたいな化け物になんかなりたくない……」Protagonist: “I-I don’t want that…. Please help me go back to being human…. I don’t want to be a monster like you….”
#エリス 「そんなに私の同族になるのが嫌か？」Elise: “Do you hate becoming my tribemates that much?”
#主人公 「当たり前だ！誰がお前みたいな化け物に！」Protagonist: “Of course!! Who would want to with a monster like you!”
#エリス 「そうか。それもそうじゃの。どうしたものかのう……」Elise: “I see. I guess I get that. Well, what else can we do?”
#それきりエリスは黙ってしまった。And then Elise went silent.
#なんとなく気勢がそがれた僕は、力なくベッドに腰掛けて頭を抱えた。Having my enthusiasm robbed, I limply sat on my bed and sunk my head in my hands.
#エリスは窓に目を向けて、何かを考え込んでいるようだった。Eise was lost in thought while gazing out the window.
#しばらくの間、ふたりとも無言だった。We were both silent for a while.
#そして──ふいにエリスは「ふう」とため息を吐いた。Then—Elise suddenly let out a sight.
#エリス 「おお、もうすぐ日が昇るのう……そろそろ寝る時間じゃ……新しいパジャマを貸してくれんかの。ここが破れってしまったんじゃ」Elise: “Oh, the sun is rising soon….It’s time to go to bed soon…Can you lend me a new pajama? It’s torn here.”
#僕は泣きながらタンスを漁り、エリスにパジャマを手渡した。I rummaged through the drawer crying and handed Elise a pair of pajamas.
#エリスは僕に背を向け素早く着替えた。Elise turned her back on me and quickly got dressed.
#僕は泣きながら聞いた。I asked, crying:
#主人公 「うぐっ、ところであんた、本当は何歳？どう見ても子供だけど、本当は僕より年上？」Protagonist: “Sob! By the way, how old are you, really? You look like a kid, but are you actually older than me?”
#エリス 「そうよのう……一番、古い記憶は、恐竜の背に乗って遊んでいたことじゃ。一匹、よく懐いていたプテラノドンがいての。それはそれは可愛かったものじゃ」Elise: “Hmmm… My oldest memories are of playing on the back of the dinosaurs. There was a Pteranodon that was especially fond of me. It was so cute.”
#主人公 「う、嘘だろ？」Protagonist: “Y-you’re kidding, right?”
#エリス 「いろんな種族と遊んだものよ。中でも人間はとびきりのペットじゃった。皆、可愛いものよ。おぬしも愛らしくてたまらん。若い男は可愛くてたまらん。……そろそろ気分が落ち着いてきたか？」Elise: “I played with all kinds of species. Humans were one of the cutest pets. There are all adorable. I really adore you too. I think young men are especially adorable. …Are you starting to calm down a little?”
#主人公 「う、うん」Protagonist: “S-sure.”
#エリス 「よしよし、涙を拭くんじゃ。もう怖いことは何もないから安心して寝るんじゃ。……そうそう、それでよい。これ以上、可愛いおぬしらが泣くのは見たくないからの。ぐっすり寝るんじゃ。起きたら何もかも良くなっているからの……そうよ、おぬしなどに世界各国の夜を見せてやろうなどと、あまりに身勝手な夢じゃった。私自身、自分の術に夢見心地だったのじゃ。やはり惚けてきたのかのう。そろそろ潮時なんじゃろうのう。だから……心揺らぐ前に行かねばならぬの」Elise: “Good, good. Wipe your tears. There is nothing to be afraid of. Go to sleep now. …That’s right. I don’t want to see you adorable ones crying anymore. Sleep well. When you wake up, everything will be better….Right, it was too much of a self-centered dream to think of showing you the nights all around the world. I was too drunk on my own spells. I wonder if I’m starting to lose my mind. I guess it’s time for me to think of retiring. That’s why….I need to go before my resolve wavers.”
#もしかしたらその優しい声に、僕は再び催眠術をかけられていたのかもしれない。信じがたいほど急激に、僕は安らかな眠りに落ちていった。寝入りばなに、玄関のドアが開いて閉じる音が聞こえてきたが……あの吸血鬼……どこに行くんだろう？もうすぐ日が昇るのに……。It might be that that gentle voice hypnotized me again. I fell into a deep and comforting sleep unbelievably quickly. As I was falling asleep, I heard the sound of the entrance door open and close, but…that vampire…where is she going? When the sun is about to rise…
#しかし『安心して寝るんじゃ』という声が頭の中でこだまして、すぐに僕は考えるのをやめ、心地よい眠りに身をゆだねた。The words, “There is nothing to be afraid of. Go to sleep now” echoed in my mind. I immediately stopped thinking and let the comfortable sleep carry me away.

#すぐにドイツ製目覚ましが発する削岩機のような大音響に叩き起こされた。この目覚まし時計、ホテルで使用したら一フロア全員が目覚めると言われている自慢の逸品である。その威力は吸血鬼に早起きを強いるほどである。I was woken up by the large drill-like sound of the German-made alarm clock. This alarm clock is the famed collector’s item that is said to wake up an entire floor of guests at a hotel. Its power is such that it can force a vampire to rise early in the morning.
#僕はもうろうとした意識でベッドからずり落ち、手探りで目覚まし時計を探した。霞んでよく見えない目で目覚まし時計のスイッチを探り、カチッと押す。な、鳴りやまない。頭にぶつけた衝撃で壊れたらしい。窓から外に放り投げようとしたが、日の光を浴びるのが恐ろしかったのでやめた。どこか別の部屋の押し入れに突っ込もう。四つんばいで午前六時の自宅を徘徊する。窓から差し込む朝光が目を焼く脳を焼く。痛い痛い痛い痛い……そして……ふと気づくと、窓を避けて床をはいずり家中をアタフタと徘徊しているうちに、僕は玄関にたどり着いていた。I dragged myself out of bed in my foggy state, and blindly looked for the alarm. With my blurred vision, I looked for the switch of the alarm and pushed it. I-it’s not stopping. I guess it broke when I hit my head against it. I tried to throw it out the window, but I was scared of being exposed to sunlight so I didn’t. I should stick it in a closet in another room. I roamed around my house on all fours at 6 am. The morning light coming through the window burns eyes, burns my brain. Ouch-ouch-ouch….and…suddenly I noticed that while I was crawling along the floor avoiding the window, and roaming the house, I had arrived at its entrance.
#僕は回らない頭で考えた。I thought with my muddled brain.
#玄関。Entrance.

#なんとなく違和感があった。There was something off.
#床にうつぶせになったまま、さらに五分ほど頭をひねった。I thought for another 5 minutes while lying face down on the floor.
#すると、やっと違和感の正体に気づいた。I then noticed why it seemed off.
#エリスの靴がない。やはり外に出て行ったのだ。つまりいまエリスは朝日の中を外出中ということだ。Elise’s shoes were missing. So she did go out. In other words, Elise was now going out in the morning sunlight.
#主人公 「こんな眩しいのによく出歩けるよな。頭おかしいんじゃないかな」Protagonist: “It’s impressive she can go out when it’s this bright out. Is she crazy?”
#まぁいい。Well, whatever.
#そんなことよりこの目覚まし時計を早くどうにかしないと──。I need to be thinking about what to do about the alarm—.
#主人公 「って違うだろ。外に出たら溶けるって、あいつ自分で言ってただろ！おーいエリス！」Protagonist: “Oh, no! She said herself that she would melt if she went outside. He—y!! Elise!!”
#叫んだが返事はなかった。やはり家の中にはいないらしい。嫌な汗が背中を伝った。やっと頭が回転してきた。僕はさらにさらに頭をひねって考えた。I yelled, but I heard no answer. She’s not home anymore. I felt sticky sweat going down my back. My brain was finally starting to work. I thought even more.
#さきほど僕はエリスに酷いことを言った。お前みたいな化け物になるのは嫌だと言った。I said something horrible to Elise before. I said that I didn’t want to become a monster like her.
#そしてエリスはこんなことを言っていた。This was what Elise said in response,
#『このウイルスは、親株が死ねば子も死ぬようになっておる』“This virus is made so that if the parent strain dies, the child dies too” and
#『おぬしはまだ神経系をちょびっと侵されているだけじゃ』“For you, it’s just a little bit of your nerves that were invaded.”
#主人公 「ということは……な、なんてこった！エリスは溶けて死ぬ気だ！死ねば僕の吸血ウイルスも死ぬ。死んで僕を人間に戻すつもりなんだ！」Protagonist: “Meaning… o-oh, my gosh! Elise is planning on killing herself by melting! If she dies, my vampire virus will die too. She plans on making me a human again by killing herself!”
#僕は寝室から毛布をありったけ取り出し、ガムテープで体にグルグル巻いた。それからサングラスをかけ、意を決して玄関のドアを開けた。全身焼けつくような痛みに襲われた。脳が焦げそうだ。熱くて溶けそうだ！I took out all the blankets in my bedroom and wrapped it all over my body, securing it with packing tape. I then put on sunglasses and opened the entrance doorway with resolve. I was covered in pain that seared my entire body. My brain is getting fried. I’m so hot I feel like I will melt!
  • “Duck tape” is closer, but since this is a trademarked word like “Kleenex” that is US-specific, “packing tape” is used instead. The idea is strong tape with a wide width.
#主人公 「ほ、本当に溶けてる……」Protagonist: “Sh-she’s really melting…”
#見ると家の前の道路に、点々と何かの染みがついていた。There were spots of stain on the road in fronts of the house.
#その染みは横断歩道を横切り、商店街の前を通り、たばこ屋の角を曲がっていた。僕はその染みを追って走った。脳髄が焼けるように痛んだが、エリスはもっと苦しいはずだ。絶滅するのもわかる。昼間、外を歩くだけでこの苦しみ……！That stain crossed the crosswalk, passed the shopping center and turned at the corner tobacco shop. I ran after those stains. My brain hurt like it was burning, but Elise must be suffering more. I get why they went extinct. It hurts this much even just walking outside during the day…!
#僕は全速力でエリスのあとを追った。I ran after Elise as fast as I could.
◆正体は人外なる者◆◆Her Real Self Is Not Human◆
#エリスは自分が吸血鬼と名乗り、そして自分もその仲間になりつつあると知らせる。Elise identifies herself as a vampire and tells me I am also about to become one.
#俺は言い知れぬ怒りにかられ、エリスを罵倒するが、彼女は優しく慰めてくれ、落ち着きと眠りを授けてくれる。I was overcome by unbelievable anger and started yelling at Elise, who soothed me gently, and gave me calmness and sleep.
#次の朝、エリスが居ないことに気付く。そしてエリスが自分のために死のうとしていることに気付き、後を追いかけるのだった。The next morning, I notice that she’s not there. Noticing that she is trying to die for me, I chase her.

#主人公 「ほ、ほんと、吸血鬼なんて弱いもんだな」Protagonist: “S-so, vampires are pretty weak, aren’t they?”

#エリスは最初に会った公園のベンチに座っていた。ベンチは杭の刺さった穴が残っていた。Elise was sitting on the bench of the park where we first met. There was still a hole on the bench where the picket had gone through.
#僕は被っていた毛布を脱ぎ、サングラスをはずしてエリスを見た。エリスはタラタラ汗をかいているように見えた。I took off the blanket I was using to cover myself, took off my sunglasses, and looked at Elise. It looked like sweat was streaming down her.
#しかしその汗はうっすら赤い。But the sweat was slightly red.
#血のように赤い……。Red like blood….
#エリスは『何をしに来た？』という顔で僕を見た。Elise looked at me as if to ask me what I had come for.
#僕は答えた。I answered,
#主人公 「希少生物を保護しにやってきた」Protagonist: “I came to capture a rare species.”
#そして毛布をエリスと自分に被せ、ふたりまとめてガムテープでグルグル巻きにし、毛布の中で、エリスを背負って、走ってふたりで家に帰る。I then covered her and myself with the blanket, wrapped the package tape around both of us, carried Elise on my back inside the blanket and the ran back home.
#エリス 「いいのか……すべてを失うことになるぞ」Elise: “Are you sure…. You’ll lose everything.”
#背中のエリスが苦しそうな息を吐きながら言う。She said as she was breathed heavily.
#主人公 「いいよ……得るモノもある」Protagonist: “It’s okay…. There are also things that I will gain…”
#家に到着した僕らは玄関で倒れ込み、そのまま寝込んでしまう。When we arrived home we collapsed at the entrance and fell asleep right there.
#そして僕らの時間、夜になり、目覚めたエリスが訊く。Then our time–night time–came, we woke up and Elise asked,
  • This is instead of 目覚めた because while saying “Elise, who woke up” is more accurate, it is stylistically ill-fit for the English. Circumstantial evidence suggests that they both woke up.
#エリス 「得るモノとはなんじゃ？」Elise: “What is it that you will earn?”
#僕は二階の自室で、旅行鞄に荷物を詰め込みながら答えた。I answered while packing my travel bag in my second-floor room,
#主人公 「まずはテレビでやってた温泉にでも行こうか」Protagonist: “Should we start by going to the hot springs we saw on TV?”

#主人公 「別れるとき寂しいなら、吸血鬼どうしで友達になればいいじゃないか」Protagonist: “If it makes you sad to part, why don’t we vampires become friends?

#エリスは僕から顔を背け、部屋の窓を開けた。She turned away from me and opened the window.
  • This is omitted because while it is natural to have this in the Japanese, it does not serve a real function in the English and when “of my room” or something like that is added to the English, it makes it redundant.
#窓から吹き込む夜の大気がエリスを包んだ。The night air coming in from the window enveloped her.
#背を向けたままエリスは言った。She said while keeping her back to me.
#エリス 「友達じゃと？ふん、笑わせるわい。……長いこと、地上最強じゃったからの。対等のつきあいなど知らんわい。同じ吸血鬼といえど、親と子の力の差は絶対じゃ。おぬしは決して私に逆らえん。かといっておぬしが自分の配下を作ることも許さん。もしおぬしが人の生き血を吸い手下を作ったときは、おぬしごとその株を絶つ」Elise: “Friends? Huh, don't make me laugh. …I was the strongest on earth for the longest time. I don’t know how to relate with others as equals. Even though we are both vampires, the power difference between parent and child is absolute. You cannot go against me ever. At the same time, I will not allow you to have subordinates of your own. If you ever suck another’s blood and create a subordinate, I will then eliminate that strain with you and all.”
#主人公 「そんな脅し、怖くないし、僕は敬語が苦手だし。エリスが嫌でも、そのうち対等になるさ」Protagonist: “I’m not afraid of that kind of threat, and I’m not good at respectful expressions anyway. Whether you like it or not, we will become equals soon.”

#長い沈黙の後に、ふんとエリスは鼻で笑った。After a long silence, Elise scoffed.

One day, Chunagon called me out and I headed off for the sacred mountain behind the capital, far deep in the mountain, to a shrine I had never seen. Chunagon was waiting for me in front of the shrine and gave me a command pointing to the inside of the dark shine. I could sense that some unidentifiable strange thing was hidden in that shrine shut inside a sturdy wooden fence.

  • The direct translation here is “help”, but the connotation is more to “spare [his life]” because Nie is begging the protagonist not to kill him.

#　俺は腰の刀に手をかけた。ミケは強い意志を感じさせる瞳で俺を睨み続けていた。そこに憎悪の色はあれど、恐怖は見えなかった。I put my hand on the sword hanging at my hip. Mike continued to glare at me with eyes that showed strong resolve. His eyes showed ample anger and disgust, but no sign of fear.

#　天長様が、ミケのわめいたがごとき卑劣な行為を、祠の中の幼き童になさろうとしているなどとは、そんなタワゴト信じられん。I cannot believe such nonsense Mike was saying that the Emperor was trying to do as vile a thing as that to the young child in the shrine.
#　到底信じることはできん。There is no way I can believe it.
#主人公 「そうだ、この嘘つきの獣め。即刻、その首切り落とし　てくれる……」Protagonist: “This lying monster. I’m going to chop off your head right now….”
#ニエ 「逃げてミケ！」Nie: “Run, Mike!”
#　俺とミケは睨み合っていた。Mike and I were glaring at each other.
#ニエ 「ミケを許してあげて！」Nie: “Please, forgive Mike!”
#　祠の中の娘の懇願だけが、山中にこだましていた。The only voice echoing throughout the mountain was the pleading voice of the girl in the shrine.
#　そして……ふいにミケは右手を動かし、俺は刀を鞘走らせた。….Suddenly, Mike moved his right hand and I started drawing the sword…
#　しかし──ミケは右手で己が涙をぬぐい、But—Mike wiped his tears with his right hand, and screaming,
#ミケ 「畜生！　畜生！　すまねえニエ！」Mike: “Bastard! Bastard! I’m sorry, Nie!!”

#　陰陽の気が激しく乱れていた。俺は丹田式呼吸法で気を整えようとした、が、祠の中から聞こえる妖魔の泣き声が、俺の精神集中を乱していた。My Yin Yang energies were greatly disturbed. I tried to calm my energy with the abdominal breathing, but the weeping of the evil spirit I heard from the shrine was disturbing my concentration.
#主人公 「静かにしろ……」Protagonist: “Be quiet….”
#ニエ 「う、うぐっ、えぐっ、ぐぐぐ……」Nie: Sob, sob, sob…
#　それきり静かになった。And then it became quiet.
#　静かになったが、俺の心は乱れたままだった。It did become quiet, but my heart remained disturbed.

#　俺は立ち上がり、祠の中を覗きこんだ。I stood up and peaked into the shrine.
#　月明かりに照らされた妖魔が、口元を押さえて、嗚咽を堪えて泣いていた。Under the moonlight, I could see the evil spirit crying while pressing her hand against her mouth to silence her sobs.
#主人公 「…………」Protagonist: “….”
#　騙されてはいかん。Do not be fooled.
#　しょせん、妖魔は妖魔、我ら朝廷に仇なす敵なり。Evil spirits are evil spirits, after all. They are enemies of our court.
#主人公 「だが……敵なれど俺はすべての理を司る者なり。無用　なことであろうが、事の真偽を計らせてもらおう」Protagonist: “However… even though a foe, I am he who governs all Reason. I’m sure this is needless, but let me evaluate the truthfulness of this matter.”
#　俺は異国よりこの地に渡りし青き目の十二支族、彼らより我が祖先に伝えられた律法の詔を唱えた。『やへい』なる異国の土地神の前では、すべての約束破りはたちどころに見抜かれ、罰を下される。I chanted the rescript of the laws relayed to my ancestors from the blue-eyed Twelve Tribes from a foreign land. Before the native god of the foreign land called “Yahei”, all those who breach promises are instantly known and punished.

#主人公 「お前はこれから本当の事を言うか？」Protagonist: “Will you tell the truth from now on?”

#主人公 「天長様が不老長寿を望んでいると申すか」Protagonist: “Are you saying that the Emperor is wishing for eternal youth and immortality?”
#ニエ 「はい」Nie: “Yes.”
#主人公 「そのために猫族の生娘なるお前とまぐわおうとしてい　ると？」Protagonist: “And he is trying to lie with you, a virgin from the Cat Tribe?”
#　その幼き妖魔、ニエとやらは顔を赤らめた。That young evil spirit called Mie or something blushed.
#主人公 「では仮にまぐわったとして、その後、お前はどうなる？　里に帰れるのか？」Protagonist: “Say that he lie with you. Then what happens to you after that? Are you then able to go back your land?”
#　ニエは首を横に振った。Nie shook her head.
#主人公 「どうなるというのか？」Protagonist: “What happens then?”
#ニエ 「きっと……すぐに土に埋められ、埋葬されるでしょう。　先代のニエもそうでしたから」Nie: “Probably… I will be buried in the ground immediately. That’s what happened to the previous Nie too.”
#主人公 「せ、先代と申したか」Protagonist: “D, did you say the ‘previous’?”
#ニエ 「そうです……私は先代のあとを継ぐ者です。遙か昔か　らこの地の族長と我が猫族の間に契約が交わされてい　るのです。本当は、この私をどうしようとも不老長寿　は叶いません。迷信なのです。しかしその迷信で私の　部族が守られるなら、ニエの名を受け継ぐ者の運命と　して私はそれを受け入れるのです」Nie: “I did… I am the heir. There is a contract between the tribe head of this land and us Cat Tribe from long long time ago. In reality, whatever you do to me, no one will obtain eternal youth and immortality. It’s a superstition. But if my tribe will be protected thanks to that superstition, I will accept it as the fate of the one that receives the Nie name.”
#主人公 「な、なんと……」Protagonist: “W, what…”
#　なんと卑劣な、なんと愚かな……。How vile… how foolish….
#　そしてなんと健気で、なんと気高き童女であろう……おお、このニエと申す猫の娘は、なんと気高き心の持ち主か！　つまり理は我が手には無く、理は我が朝廷にみじんも存在せず、理はすべてこの娘の側が握っていたということなのか！What an earnest and noble young girl…Oh, this cat girl called Nie, what a noble heart she has! Does this mean that Reason is not in my hand, Reason does not exist even a bit in my court, and in fact that Reason was always on this girl’s side?

That’s why my tribe was able to receive holy contracts from all the spirits and gods that exist in the world. But… but… that should be the same for the Emperor who governs the court. Our Emperor governs all of this land due to a contract with Kunitsukami. How can I, of a miserly standing, rebel against that will.”

But that’s not because the court is on the side of justice. The court has power and if I were to rebel, my strength, wisdom, power and life will be taken from me in an instant and I will be killed. That fear is contorting my Reason.

#　だが俺よ……よくよく見よこの猫族の少女を！But…. But…. I must look closely at this Cat Tribe girl!!
#　彼女は己のすべてが奪われると知りつつもなお、己の理に健気な勇気を重ね、惨い運命に従順に従っているではないか。この未開の猫族の娘に、我が一族の理が負けるとでもいうのか？She is obediently following her cruel destiny, earnestly and bravely living out her Reason, even while knowing that everything will be taken from her. Are we saying that our tribe’s Reason will be defeated by this primitive Cat Tribe’s Reason?

What must I do! Are you telling me to protect Reason and to resign myself to certain death? Or are you telling me to protect my life and discard Reason??”

#　すでに万物の理は我を見捨て、我が魂は万物から切り離されたかのごときに感じられた。そうだ、理は臆病者の手の内には決して留まることはない。Universal Reason has already forsaken me and my soul felt like it was cut off from the universe. That’s right, Reason never remains in the hands of a coward.
#　だとしても……死にたくないと思うのは陰陽師としても当然のこと。そうだ、俺は最も力強き陰陽師であり、これからますますその力は強まり、神々にも匹敵する力をいずれこの掌中に収めるであろう。そんな俺が、このような卑しい身分の娘のためにこの命を投げ出すなどと……。But… It is in our nature—even for an Onmyoji—to not want to die. I am the most powerful Onmyoji, that power should strengthen even more, and I will probably have in my hands power that is comparable to the gods. That I would throw away my life for such a lowly girl….

#　迷いは永劫に続くかと思われた。It felt like I would feel lost forever.
#主人公 「…………」Protagonist: “…..”
#　あるいはそのときニエの声を聞かなければ、俺は本当に、すべてを捨て去ってしまったかもしれない……。Perhaps if I had not heard Nie’s voice then I might have really thrown everything away then….
#ニエ 「そうですよ、迷うことはありません」Nie: “That’s right. You have no Reason to feel lost.”
#　頭抱える俺にニエが言った。Nie said to tormented me.
#ニエ 「どうすればいいか教えてあげます。こちらに来て」Nie: “I will tell you what you should do. Come here.”
#　ニエは柵越しに、俺に手を伸ばし、俺を呼んだ。Nie stretched out her hand beyond the fence and called me over.
#　俺は呆けた足取りで、ニエに近づき、その手に触れようとした。I went close to her without firm footing and stretched out my hand towards hers.
#　瞬間、ざくりと右手の肉を抉られた。At that moment, something scooped out the flesh of my right hand.
#ニエ 「ほら、猫族は獰猛な妖魔なんです。人間のあなたは私　のことなど気にしてはなりません」Nie: “See, we of the Cat Tribe are fierce evil spirits. You humans should not concern yourselves with me.”
#主人公 「…………」Protagonist: “…..”
#ニエ 「早く手を引っ込めないと、今度は肉だけではすみませ　んよ。骨まで切り裂きますよ！」Nie: “If you don’t pull back your hand now, next I will go deeper than your flesh. I will slash down to your bones!”
#　だがそう叫ぶニエの頬は涙に濡れているのだった。But Nie’s cheeks were wet with tears as she shouted those words.
#　そして俺はやっとのことで気づくのだった。That finally made me realize:
#主人公 「そうか……これが理か……」Protagonist: “I see….. This is Reason….”
#　月明かりに照らされたその涙こそ、この世に真の理が存在する紛れもない証拠だ。Those tears under the moonlight were themselves the unmistakable evidence that true Reason exists in this world.
#　とうの昔に、わかっているつもりだった、この世の理──。Reason of this world—I thought I had understood it a long time ago.
#　しかし心の底では、俺はいつも疑っていたのかもしれぬ。But maybe I had always been skeptical of it in the hearts of my hearts.
#　理を信奉するふりをして、もっともその存在を疑っていたのは、実はこの俺だったのかもしれぬ……。Perhaps I was the very one who pretended to worship Reason and was actually most skeptical of its existence.
#　しかし……しかしもはや心は揺るぐまい。But…. But, my heart is no longer wavering.
#主人公 「ふっ。礼を言う、獣の娘よ。いま俺は陰陽の神髄を悟っ　たのだ……」Protagonist: “Huh. I thank you, beastly girl. I just understood the essence of Onmyo….”
#　俺はニエの鋭い爪を、両手でそっと包み込んだ。I gently wrapped my hands around Nie’s sharp nails.
#　手のひらに食い込み、血がにじみ、ぽたぽたと地に落ちた。The nails dug into my palms, blood seeped out, heavy drops of blood fell on the ground.
#ニエ 「ダメです……あなたまで殺されてしまいます……」Nie: “You shouldn’t…You will be killed too…”
#主人公 「ふっ」Protagonist: “Hm!”
#　俺は唇をゆがめ、そして印を結んだ。地に落ちた血が五芒星を描き、闇夜に赤く煌めいた。風がおこり、ニエは祠の奥に吹き飛ばされた。I twisted my lips and formed a sign with my hands. The blood that fell on the ground drew a five-pointed star and twinkled in red in the dark night. A gust of wind blew Nie to the back of the shrine.
#　俺は叫んだ。I screamed.
#主人公 「おお、舐めるなよ小娘！　我が深淵なる奥義と、血と　命によってあがなわれる理が共にあれば、俺は天長を　も神をも超えてみせる！」Protagonist: “Do not underestimate me, girl! With the deep profound teachings and Reason atoned for by blood and life, I can surpass even the Emperor and the gods!!”
#　そして俺は大黒天の真言を唱え、破壊の雷を呼び、破壊不能の術が施された祠の木柵を粉みじんに吹き飛ばした。I then chanted the true words of Daikokuten to call down the thunder of destruction, and the wooden fence around the shrine that had on it a spell that made it unbreakable, was shattered.
#　おお見よ我が力を朝廷よ、天長よ、中納言よ！See my power, the court, the Emperor, Chunagon!!
#　俺を捕らえられるものなら捕らえてみるがいい。Try capturing me if you can.
#　そしてニエよ、獣の体に理を宿す美しき娘よ！　俺の力を頼るがいい！Nie, a beautiful girl that houses Reason in a beast’s body! Rely upon on my powers!
#主人公 「さあ一緒に来るのだ！　そしてしっかりと俺に抱きつ　くんだ！　飛ぶぞ！」俺はがるだの真言を唱え、衣に　風をはらませ飛んだ。この俺の力の爆発──もはや誰　にもとめられぬ──俺は月に届かんばかりに天高く飛　翔し、一息にニエを、いずこかの安全な異国の地に連　れていこうとしていた。Protagonist: “Come with me! Hold onto me tightly! We are going to fly!” I chanted the True Words of Garda and flew, with the wind under my clothes. This explosion of my power—now unstoppable—I was trying to take Nie to some safe foreign land in an instant by flying up high, almost to the moon.
◆勅命と理◆◆The Royal Command and Reason◆
#　勅命により、祠に封印されている妖魔を敵から守ることとなった。I was given a royal command to protect an evil spirit sealed in a shrine from enemies.
#　途中、封印されている妖魔を奪還するべく、その仲間が来襲するが、それを撃退。だが、そこで恐ろしい真実を知るのだった。Eventually, one of the comrades of the sealed evil spirit comes to try to take it back, but I chase it away. But I then learn the horrible truth.
#　封印されていた妖魔は、理を反し、迷言のために政治的取り引きで生贄となっている少女だった。The sealed evil spirit was a girl sacrificed for political purposes because of a superstition that was contrary to Reason.
#　命を守り、理を犯している者に従うか、命を捨ててでも理を貫くか。永遠と続くかと思われた自問自答。それを答えを、生贄の少女が導き出してくれるのだった。The dilemma of whether to protect one’s own life and obey the one in breach of Reason or to remain consistent with Reason even at the expense of one’s life seemed to last for eternity. The sacrificed girl teased out the answer for me.

#主人公 「が……！」Protagonist: “Gah!!!”
#　見えない障壁にぶつかり、俺は地に落ちた。ニエを抱きながら錐揉み落下しつつ、俺は視界の隅に松明を掲げた中納言の姿を見た。I bumped into an invisible barrier and fell to the ground. While I was spiraling down with Nie in my arms, I spotted Chunagon holding a torch from the corner of my eyes.
#中納言 「ごらんになりましたか天長様！　アレがヤツの正体で　す。まさに忌まわしき逆賊の浅ましき姿。天長様に捧　げられるべき不老長寿の神薬をかすめ取るあの泥棒の　手つき。もはや騙されてはなりませんぞ。さぁご命令　を！　朝廷に仇なす逆賊討伐の勅命を！」Chunagon: “Have you seen, Your Majesty? That is his true self¬—the cursed rebel’s despicable true figure. Look at the way that thief steals away the holy potion of eternal youth and immortality that rightly belongs to you. You should no longer be fooled. Please command me now! Give your royal command to punish the rebel, the enemy of the court!!”
#　牛車の中の人影が、かすかに首を、縦に振った。 　そして権力欲に爛々と輝き出した、中納言の醜き瞳──落下中の俺と、ヤツは、一瞬だけ目を合わせた。 　中納言は叫んだ。The shadow in the carriage nodded slightly. Chunagon’s ugly eyes—the eyes which started glaring with greed—met mine for a split second as I was falling. Chunagon cried out.
#中納言 「弓兵部隊はヤツの落下地点を取り囲め！　陰陽部隊は　ヤツの術を無効化しろ」Chunagon: “Archers! Surround the area where he will fall to! Onmyoji! Annul his spells!!”
#　そして俺はようやく気づくのだった。 　罠にかかった。すべては中納言の罠だった。ニエの境遇を知れば、俺が理に従い朝廷に徒なすであろうことをヤツは予測していた。だからヤツはかくも簡単な任務に俺を就かせたのだ。Then, I finally realized. I was set up. Chunagon had plotted this. He had predicted that I would follow Reason and rebel against the court if I found out Nie’s situation. That’s why he assigned me such an easy task.
#主人公 「許しておけぬ！」Protagonist: “I cannot forgive this!”
#　激しい怒りが俺の丹田に渦巻いた。しかし怒りによって満ちた陰の気は無数の陰陽師どもによって即座に吸い取られていった。俺は残り少ない陽の気を用いて、落下地点の樹木の精霊に働きかけた。Intense anger swirled in my core. But the Yin energy that was filled with anger was instantaneously absorbed by the countless Onmyoji. I worked on the tree spirits I was going to fall on using the little remaining Yang energy I had.
#主人公 「成長せよ！　そして我らを包み込め！」Protagonist: “Grow! Then, embrace us!”
#　地面に激突する寸前で、俺とニエは樹木の精が張り巡らしてくれた網に掬い上げられた。樹木の精はすぐさま我らを静かに地に下ろし、あちらに逃げよと生い茂る枝を掲げて道を示した。Just before we were to smash into the ground, Nie and I were scooped up by the net that the tree spirits spread out for us. They quickly and quietly let us land and with their lush branches, pointed to the way out for us.
  • I decided to omit the あちらに逃げよ (“run that way”) quote out of the English because: 1) the meaning is already conveyed and 2) more English would have to be added to incorporate that quote which will needlessly make the whole sentence longer.

  • This is an adapted (as opposed to “translated”) sentence, 逆とげが付いている, which only from context (which appears later) you can figure out is referring to the arrowhead.

Your bleeding will tell us where you are even in the dark!! Even the strongest Onmyoji is a helpless rabbit with an arrow injury, isn’t he? Look at how sloppily you are going about! You are just blindly wandering, aimlessly meandering in the mountain! Why not show your power as the Head Onmyo Astrologer!”
